Kyoto University of Foreign Studies will hold campus and community exchange programs from October 18 to 20 to coincide with the visit to Kyoto by the United Nations Chorus, composed of current staff at UN Headquarters in New York. The aim of this first visit in about 10 years is to promote a culture of peace through music and international exchange.

On the 19th, a peace concert will be held at the South Hall of ROHM Theatre Kyoto, including a peace declaration signature drive alongside the performance. On the 18th, the chorus will join an environmental fair in Kameoka and take part in cultural exchange such as visiting a shrine; on the 20th, there will be a class exchange and lunch gathering at the university, with students serving as interpreters and attendants.

At the class exchange on the 20th, Mieko Ikegame, a former UN staff member, will give a guest speech on the SDGs and the global environment, and students will present on Model United Nations. The program is supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City and others.

Key points

  • The October 19 peace concert at ROHM Theatre Kyoto is free
  • About 15 students support the exchange as interpreters and attendants
  • Class exchange themed on the SDGs and Model United Nations

Why we recommend this event

Chances to hear UN staff convey peace through music are rare. Because it is free, it is easy for anyone interested in the UN or international cooperation to attend.

With students involved in running it, it is also a chance to see the next generation engaging in international exchange.

Editor's comment

Music can cross language barriers and share a wish for peace.
