Reskill Inc., which provides employee training, announced that it will start supporting the literacy education that the certified NPO JHP-School Building Association (JHP) carries out in Cambodia. The plan is to open a new eight-month literacy class in rural areas.

The target is people aged 15 and over who could not attend school as children and cannot read, write or do arithmetic, and about 100 learners are expected. First the teachers will be trained in adult education, and then the teachers who complete the training course will teach from 6 to 8 p.m., so that the classes do not burden learners' daily lives. The classes will be held in four villages in Kampong Cham Province where literacy rates are low.

Reskill will donate a full set of writing materials to learners and cover the teachers' full salaries. The company says it chose to give support because its mission of "delivering working-adult education to as many people as possible" matched JHP's work of bringing learning opportunities to adults.

Key points

  • An eight-month evening literacy class in rural villages for adults aged 15 and over who could not attend school
  • A system that starts by training teachers so that local teachers conduct the classes
  • A company in adult education supports an international cooperation NGO as an extension of its own core mission

Why we are paying attention to this news

The announcement points out that people who cannot read or write find it hard to escape poverty, for example because they cannot read prices or contracts and are cheated. Adult literacy education not only protects the learners' work and livelihoods but also connects to the next generation, as parents who have learned encourage their children's learning.

The form of partnership in which a company chooses to support activities close to its own strengths and philosophy is also a useful reference. For an NGO, it is a reassuring partnership in which the company can explain the significance of the work in its own words.

Editor's comment

Many organizations work on children's education, but support that shines a light on "adults who could not go to school" is valuable. In touches such as holding classes in the evening to fit learners' lives, I sense the experience of JHP, which has long worked in Cambodia.

It is very fitting support: an employee training company spreading "adult learning" to the world. If you have become interested in JHP's work, please also take a look at the organization's official website.
