WAFCA takes its name from Wheelchairs and Friendship Center of Asia. It is an international cooperation NGO that aims to support the independence and quality of life of children with disabilities in Asia by providing wheelchairs. Founded in 1999 in Kariya, Aichi, it works in Thailand, Indonesia and Japan.
In Asia, there are children who cannot afford a wheelchair, cannot go to school and become isolated from society. WAFCA stays close to each child by listening to the child and family in an assessment, fitting and providing a wheelchair that suits the child's body, and following up with repairs and replacements as the child grows.
Its work rests on three pillars, wheelchair support, education support for children with disabilities and barrier-free support, along with exchange programs. Results for fiscal 2024 were 401 wheelchairs donated (155 in Thailand and 246 in Indonesia), 110 scholarship students and 5 barrier-free construction projects. In Japan it also holds visiting classes and a charity run and walk.

Why this organization's work stands out
WAFCA does not stop at delivery. It stays with children as they grow toward independence. Its support expanding from wheelchairs to education and barrier-free improvements is a useful reference.
There are many ways to take part, from monthly supporters starting at 1,000 yen and membership to volunteering, internships, events and study tours. Published articles of incorporation, business reports and activity reports are also reassuring for those considering support.

Editor's comment
I was struck by the idea that a single wheelchair can lead to the joy of going out and the pleasure of learning.
Details on the activities and how to take part are on the official website. Please take a look.
