Shikoku Global Network (SGN) is an NGO whose vision is a sustainable society in which all people can live peaceful days as human beings. It began as a study group after an introductory seminar on international cooperation held in Ehime in 1998, became the Ehime Global Network, and took its current name in April 2024.

Its work rests on four pillars: international cooperation, environmental conservation, ESD and networking. Its missions are to support the independence of people in need through citizen participation, to spread global citizenship education and build a multicultural society, and to build networks with citizens and organizations in the region, in Japan and overseas.

Its website features a report session on flood relief in Mozambique, international cooperation classes for schools, volunteer recruitment, fair trade products and information on its NGO adviser system. It also notes that in 2026 SGN received a Special Award for regional studies from the Daido Life Foundation for International Culture.

Key points

  • A community-born NGO that started as a citizens' study group in Ehime and has expanded across and beyond Shikoku
  • Four programs (international cooperation, environment, ESD and networking) address global issues
  • Many ways to engage, including information for schools and companies, fair trade and an NGO adviser system

Why this organization's work stands out

Under the idea that a single region like Ehime can take on global issues, SGN applies the same concept locally and across borders. It offers a way to think about international cooperation starting from our own communities.

It has systems to support people who want to get involved, such as classroom support for schools and an adviser system. Volunteer opportunities and fair trade offer easy ways to take part.

Editor's comment

The path from a local study group to an NGO that supports people across borders shows the power of citizens. It will likely feel especially close to those living in Shikoku.

Details of the activities and how to take part are on the official website. Please take a look.
