NEPEMCO is the short name of the Nepal Educational Medical Cultural Organization, a nonprofit that supports local development in Nepal, mainly in education, health care and culture. Its main activities are listed as four: education, health care, culture and the environment (relating to the Bagmati River and glacial lakes). Under the slogan "Equal chances for every child!", it aims to give hope to children.
The organization aims to provide educational support to people whose opportunities for education have been taken away by factors such as poverty, traditional religion and natural disasters, especially children and women from poor households and people from ethnic groups, and to nurture people with dignity. It was officially registered on June 11, 2005, and in the same year opened literacy classes in Chapot in Patan and in Dukchap village. The classes are offered free of charge.
Literacy means the reading, writing and arithmetic skills needed in daily life. The website explains that acquiring them builds confidence, teaches the importance of education, and lets people share what they learn with family and others. The organization also continues a scholarship program, and after the 2015 Nepal earthquake it distributed food in affected areas and ran fundraising.
Key points
- Works with education at its core, under the slogan "Equal chances for every child!"
- Offers free literacy classes at two sites, Chapot and Dukchap
- Continues a scholarship program and has also distributed food and raised funds after an earthquake
Why this organization deserves attention
Reading, writing and arithmetic skills are the foundation for improving daily life and becoming independent in the future. NEPEMCO supports the entrance to that path in familiar forms, such as literacy classes and scholarships.
Because people who know local conditions are at the center of the work, it has been able to act close to the community, for example by delivering food quickly after a disaster. It is also a good way to learn about life and education in Nepal.

Editor's comment
Learning to read, or being able to go to school, widens the world a little for each person. NEPEMCO's work conveys an attitude of treasuring that small first step.
