Little Bees International (LBI) is an NPO born from encounters with the people of the Korogocho slum in Kenya, Africa. It aims to nurture in the slum's women and children the strength to live, based on "self-discipline" and "independence" rather than dependence. It values relationships in which small efforts joined together are tied by smiles, so that people in Japan can also feel the appeal of the people of Africa.

On site, it distributes food ingredients for school meals to children at the community school and buys and distributes new textbooks. It is reported that children who had not had enough materials and shared a limited number of books among several students can now hold textbooks of their own. At the Amani Education Center, it also holds environmental classes on the theme of the SDGs.

On the environmental side, it has carried out tree planting, clean-ups and land leveling along the Nairobi River with about 100 children and local residents. At the community hall it has also held "Mottainai" environmental seminars attended by more than 100 people, learning together about responding to climate change, the significance of tree planting and waste reduction.

Key points

  • Providing food ingredients for school meals and buying and distributing textbooks for the community school
  • Tree planting along the Nairobi River with about 100 children and residents
  • Places to learn with the community, such as "Mottainai" environmental seminars drawing more than 100 people

Why this organization deserves attention

Eating, learning and protecting the living environment: it supports these three foundations of children's daily lives together with local people. It is reported that having school meals gives children a reason to go to school and brings hope to the whole community.

Its activities are reported regularly with photos. Local people take part in tree planting and environmental seminars as the main players, suggesting that a relationship has grown that goes beyond "supporting and being supported."

Editor's comment

Its activity reports, often closing with "Asante sana" (thank you), convey warm relationships with local people. The sight of children planting small saplings is the very picture of hope for the future.
