Efa Japan is an international cooperation NGO that aims for a society where every child can realize their potential and creativity and write their own story. Its name comes from the initials of "Empowerment For All," and it works to protect and nurture children, believing in the power of education.

It was established in 2004 as the successor to "Asian Children's House," an international cooperation project carried out by people working in public services across Japan, such as local governments, public hospitals, nurseries, welfare facilities and waterworks. It works in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Japan, providing safe places and educational opportunities for children facing poverty and discrimination, especially girls and children with disabilities.

Its website reports, as results from its founding through the end of March 2026, 70 projects carried out and books and learning delivered to 817,230 people. Its domestic work is also featured, including a book cafe in the area affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, reports on participation in library conferences, and a recycling donation program called "Gururito."

Key points

  • Supporting children's education and welfare in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Japan
  • 70 projects carried out from its founding through the end of March 2026
  • Varied ways to give, including the monthly supporter program "Efa Partner" and recycling donations

Why this organization deserves attention

Its approach of bringing Japan's experience to Asia and Asia's experience to Japan stands out, with each region's knowledge and experience put to use for the others.

It rests on the commitment of public service workers across the country and has been supported by many people in all 47 prefectures. With donation methods using everyday items such as books, clothing and postcards, it seems easy to take part.

Editor's comment

Children meet books and begin to draw their own stories. Efa Japan's work conveys the hope that opportunities to learn can bring.
