Children of Light Association is an NPO that carries out education-based activities in Japan and in a small fishing village in northeastern Brazil. It supports children so that they can gain the "life skills" to choose their own futures. Activities began in April 2000, and it was established as a corporation in August 2015.
The official website presents its work in three parts: activities in Japan, childcare support and community activities in Brazil. Its stated purposes include education-based projects in Brazil, working toward more stable and better lives for local residents through traditional culture, and offering people in Japan a place for international exchange and cooperation.
Beyond donations, people can feel Brazilian culture and the children's smiles up close by joining events and buying local handicrafts. The organization has 5 directors, 1 auditor, 8 staff (part-time, unpaid) and 54 regular members, and publishes activity and financial reports and a newsletter, "Canoa Dayori."
Key points
- Education-based activities in two places: a fishing village in northeastern Brazil and Japan

- Activity reports, financial reports and newsletters are published
Why this organization's work stands out
It aims for children to be able to choose their own futures, and carries out support in Brazil alongside childcare support in Japan. It also looks toward mutual understanding between Japan and Brazil.
Run on membership fees and donations by part-time, unpaid staff and members, it is a useful reference as a citizen-supported activity.

Editor's comment
I felt warmth in an activity that connects children in faraway Brazil with everyday childcare in Japan.
