To mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's UN membership, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC Tokyo) will hold the "80 Years of the United Nations" traveling exhibition from October 2026 into 2027. Starting at the Toyota City Museum on October 23, 2026, it will visit universities in the UN Academic Impact network, UN depository libraries, public facilities and more.

The exhibition recreates the timeline that was popular at the UN Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Visitors can follow the story from the UN's founding in 1945, alongside changes in the world population and the number of member states, and test their knowledge with quizzes.

Some venues will also display items from the Expo UN Pavilion, such as the official uniform, the orb and stamps, and host related events. An event will be held alongside the exhibition at the Yamaguchi Prefectural Government Office on November 8. More venues will be added, and schedules may change, so please check the UNIC Tokyo website for the latest information.

Key points

  • Look back on 80 years of the UN through a timeline and quizzes
  • Experience the legacy of the Expo UN Pavilion close to home
  • A related event takes place in Yamaguchi on November 8

Why we recommend this event

Global issues can feel distant, but a timeline of what the UN has done over 80 years shows how humanitarian aid, development and the environment connect to everyday life.

Because the venues include universities, libraries and public facilities, it is easy for students and local residents to drop by. It is a good chance to think about Japan's ties with the international community in this anniversary year.

Editor's comment

For those who couldn't visit the Expo, this is a valuable chance to enjoy the atmosphere of the UN Pavilion close to home. The quiz format makes it a good outing with children or students.

Once you find a venue near you, please stop by. Check the UNIC Tokyo website for the latest venues and dates.
