2027 marks 70 years since Japan and Malaysia established diplomatic relations. To mark the anniversary, the two countries plan a variety of exchange programs under the theme "Enriching Each Other, Creating Together," and will invite the public to submit a logo for use in the commemorative events.
Anyone who holds Japanese or Malaysian nationality and lives in either country may apply. There is no limit on the number of entries. Applicants send two designs, a color version and a black-and-white version, by e-mail together with an application form that explains the intent of the design in about 200 characters. Conditions include incorporating the colors of both countries' flags in the color version, submitting a work that has not been previously published, and not using generative AI.
Entries will be judged by the 70th anniversary executive committee and officials from both countries, and the single best entry will become the official logo. The selected logo is expected to be used in commemorative projects that support exchange in a wide range of fields, including the economy, society, the arts, academia, sports and tourism.
Key points
- An open call for the official 70th anniversary logo, for citizens of both Japan and Malaysia
- The theme is "Enriching Each Other, Creating Together," and the color version must incorporate the colors of both countries' flags
- Unlimited entries, deadline of November 10, 2026 (must arrive by this date), and no use of generative AI
Why this news deserves attention
Diplomatic commemorative projects can feel distant, but a call for a logo is a rare chance for citizens to take part with their own hands in building the relationship between the two countries. The selected design will serve as the "face" of the many exchange programs during the anniversary year.
Thinking about how to express 70 years of exchange can itself be a way to learn about the other country's culture and history. For students and designers interested in international exchange, it is also an accessible entry point to international cooperation.

Editor's comment
Incorporating the flag colors while packing 70 years of exchange into a single mark is the kind of theme designers will relish. If you have studied or worked in Malaysia, or have friends there, perhaps a memorable landscape could provide inspiration.
Applications are by e-mail only, and the deadline is November 10 (must arrive by that date). The application form and detailed conditions are on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs page, so if you love design or care about friendship between the two countries, please give it a try.
