This online special lecture is part of the N High School Group's International Education Program, which lets students learn while connecting with the world. Its theme is "What is international cooperation work? A look at the front lines facing global challenges, starting with refugee issues."
The first half covers the current state of the world's refugee issues and the role and activities of UNHCR. Drawing on the guest's roughly 25 years in international cooperation at organizations including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, JICA and an international NGO, it also introduces what working in an international organization involves and what junior and senior high school students can do now.
In the Q&A session, participating students exchange views directly with the guest on international affairs, future paths and language study. The lecture can be watched via Zoom webinar, including by people outside the school.
Key points
- Learn the basics of refugee issues and UNHCR's work
- Hear about the realities of international cooperation careers
- Anyone can watch via Zoom webinar
Why We Recommend This Event
Refugee issues often appear in the news yet can feel distant. Hearing from someone close to the field can be a chance to see them as a social issue that connects to our own lives.
It may also offer hints on future paths for students interested in international cooperation, as well as their parents.

“We often see refugee figures in the news, but rarely hear from someone with 25 years of fieldwork. I think this talk could help connect those numbers to the real work behind them.”

“I'd love to learn about that real work behind the numbers too, Aoba. Hearing it from someone with about 25 years in the field is valuable, and I like that teens can ask questions in the Q&A and anyone can watch.”

“Hearing you both, I'm reminded how much a good entry point matters. The title asking what kind of job international cooperation is avoids jargon and opens the door gently for young listeners.”

Comment from Editor-in-Chief Ren Date
