Mayors and other representatives of the Thai cities of Bueng Yitho, Lamphun, Mu Si and Thepharak will visit Japan from October 26 to 31, traveling to Tokyo, Yokohama and Yugawara. The four are core members of the "SMART & STRONG Project," a JICA Partnership Program in which Thai and Japanese local governments learn from each other about elderly care.

During the visit, a seminar will be held in which the mayors themselves talk about local practices and the thinking behind them. Researchers, government officials, students and others interested in aging in Thailand and comprehensive elderly care are invited to attend.

Key points

  • Four Thai mayors speak directly about their communities' response to aging
  • Join on-site at JICA Yokohama or online
  • Free to attend; apply via the QR code on the flyer

Why We Recommend This Event

Aging is a challenge shared not only by Japan but by many countries in Asia, including Thailand. Grassroots cooperation in which local governments learn from one another offers hints for community-wide care.

Hearing directly from mayors is a valuable opportunity. For people working in welfare and community development, and for students interested in international cooperation, it can broaden perspectives.

Editor's comment

This event shows that international cooperation is not only about helping developing countries but also a two-way effort from which we in Japan can learn.

Since you can also join online, people far from Yokohama are welcome to drop in. Please check JICA Yokohama's official page for details and registration.
