Peace Village United is a general incorporated association with the slogan "Build peace. Stop conflict." It was founded in 2019 by Japanese and Afghan colleagues who had worked together at another NGO on peace activities in Afghanistan.

The "village" in its name is a metaphor for the many kinds of communities where people live, from local areas and societies to countries and the world. Its work proceeds in two directions: creating and protecting peaceful communities ("peace villages") by joining forces, and solidarity among those communities ("peace village solidarity").

In Afghanistan it ran "Afghanistan Peace Action!" from April 2020 to March 2024, producing booklets on peace and nonviolence, training local coordinators and supporting peace activities led by residents. In Pakistan it supports community peace activities by young people and their solidarity with Afghanistan. At Global Festa 2026 it is also presenting an exhibition of art and poetry by Afghan women.

Key points

  • An organization whose purpose is to stop conflict and create peaceful communities
  • Supports peace efforts by residents and young people themselves in Afghanistan and Pakistan
  • Also engages in advocacy, awareness-raising and sharing the situation on the ground

Why this organization's work stands out

It was born from the idea that, beyond humanitarian aid and reconstruction after conflict, activities to stop conflict in the first place are needed. It emphasizes local people themselves leading peace education and learning about nonviolence.

Its website shares activity and financial reports as well as recent information that brings out voices from the field, such as art by Afghan women and a crowdfunding campaign for a publication.

Editor's comment

It was encouraging to learn that there are efforts to stop conflict in distant countries through the strength of local people themselves.
