The Yokohama NGO Network (YNN) was established in 2001 by NGOs in Yokohama and Kanagawa Prefecture who wanted to cooperate, strengthen one another and broaden international cooperation. NGOs that had met through international cooperation events came together, and on November 13, 2006 it became a specified nonprofit corporation. Its motto is "We aim for a fair and peaceful society through connections with the world."

Its predecessor was the Yokohama NGO Liaison Council, formed by NGOs that gathered to prepare the annual Yokohama International Cooperation Festival. YNN strengthens a network in which local NGOs learn from one another, and plays an intermediary-support role in international cooperation, linking other sectors and citizens with NGOs. It also carries out activities related to SDG 16 and SDG 17.

Its main programs are running the network and exchanging information and opinions; promoting international cooperation and multicultural coexistence through a loose framework called "SDGs Multicultural CITY"; developing people through its own volunteer registration system "e-vo" and by hosting student interns; and responding to consultations and requests for lecturers from local residents, organizations, companies and schools. It also publishes videos and other content planned and researched by students.

Key points

  • A regional network that began in 2001 when NGOs in Yokohama and Kanagawa came together
  • Develops people through the "e-vo" volunteer registration system and student internships
  • Responds to consultations and lecturer requests on international cooperation from locals, companies and schools

Why this organization deserves attention

Even if you are interested in international cooperation, it can be hard to know which organization to approach or how. YNN serves as a local gateway connecting NGOs, taking consultations and introducing its member organizations.

It also creates opportunities for younger people to engage with international cooperation, for example through study sessions and interviews led by students. Rooted in the community yet connected to the world, it is an approachable entry point.

Editor's comment

What is hard for one organization to reach can spread when partners connect. YNN supports a circle of people who look out to the world from the Yokohama and Kanagawa area.

If you are interested in volunteering or international cooperation, why not look at the member organization pages and news on the official website?
