The Yucho Foundation is a general incorporated foundation that carries out public interest projects such as research and research grants on personal savings activities conducted through post offices, support for international volunteer activities, and financial education and consultation. Since its establishment on December 1, 1969 as the Postal Savings Promotion Association, it went through mergers and name changes before becoming a general incorporated foundation on April 1, 2012.

Support for international volunteer activities has continued as the foundation's own grant program even after the allocation of funds from International Volunteer Savings ended. In addition to the "NGO Overseas Aid Activity Grants" for Japanese NGOs working abroad, the "Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Grants" for private organizations working on multicultural coexistence in Japan began in fiscal 2024. Both cover part of activity costs.

For fiscal 2027, it announces a new "priority selection for young initiative activities," which gives priority to organizations whose lead person and core officers are aged 39 or younger. Lists of past grantee organizations and newsletters are also published. The foundation additionally provides activity grants to NPOs and others working on financial consultation.

Key points

  • "NGO Overseas Aid Activity Grants" covering part of the activity costs of Japanese NGOs working abroad
  • "Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Grants" for work in Japan, added in fiscal 2024
  • A new priority-selection category for organizations led by young people in the fiscal 2027 call

Why this organization deserves attention

Rather than working on site itself, it plays the role of supporting NGOs and private organizations active in the field through grants. It covers two different fields: overseas aid and multicultural coexistence in Japan.

By publishing lists of past grantee organizations and newsletters, it offers clues about which organizations are active. It is also a useful source for NGOs and NPOs looking for funding to learn about grant trends.

Editor's comment

I feel that NGO activities continue thanks to both the people who work on the ground and the mechanisms that support them. A foundation that backs the challenges of small organizations through grants is reassuring.

The newsletters of grantee organizations introduce the situation on site. Why not look at the official website and find an organization that interests you?
