PLAS is an international cooperation NGO working with local partner organizations in Kenya and Uganda. For this campaign, it is raising funds for parent-child support through Shibuya Ward's furusato nozei crowdfunding. The project is titled "Meals and Learning Every Day for Children Who Go to School Hungry."

In the areas where PLAS works, some families struggle to afford daily meals, school supplies and fees. PLAS combines training in small-business skills, so parents can earn income, with counseling for parents and children to support children's education.

The release also introduces Mary (a pseudonym) in Kenya. After her uncle learned poultry farming, the family could regularly provide meals and school supplies, and he became more involved in her schooling. Mary now attends junior high school.

If the 600,000-yen goal is exceeded, funds will also be used for activities needed locally at the time, such as parent-child support and sex education programs.

Key points

  • Support combining parents' economic independence with parent-child counseling
  • Donations can be made as furusato nozei to Shibuya Ward, until December 31
  • Goal of 600,000 yen; any excess goes to locally needed activities

Why This News Is Worth Noting

Rather than only providing meals and supplies, PLAS helps parents earn income while giving families time to think about the future together. It is support that builds families' own strength.

Being able to take part through the familiar furusato nozei system also makes it easier for first-time donors to take a step.

Editor's comment

The organization's philosophy of creating support rather than simply giving it shows clearly in the change in Mary's family.
