On October 9, JICA signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Benin in Cotonou for the Project for the Construction of the Flyover of Vêdoko Intersection in Cotonou City (Phase 2).
Phase 1 grade-separated the west-to-east direction. As its successor, this phase will build a two-lane flyover for the opposite direction (east to west), along with drainage, road lighting, guard fences and other facilities.
The project aims to ease congestion at the intersection and on city arterial roads and reduce collisions between pedestrians and vehicles. It also includes consulting services for detailed design, bidding assistance and construction supervision.
Key points
- Phases 1 and 2 together aim to ease congestion at a key traffic hub in Benin
- Japan positions the West Africa Growth Ring, including Benin, as one of three priority areas for corridor development in Africa
- The project is listed as contributing to SDGs 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 13 (climate action)
Why this news deserves attention
Roads and bridges support not only the movement of people but also the flow of food and medicine. It is instructive that improving a single intersection is linked to logistics across neighboring countries.
International cooperation is often associated with education and health, but infrastructure is also an important field that underpins people's safety and the economy.

Editor's comment
Official announcements like this are a helpful way to see how Japan's official development assistance is actually used.
It may not feel close to home, but thinking of how easing congestion at one point in the world connects to regional logistics and safety shows how far international cooperation reaches. Why not read the original release too?
