Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has entered its fifth year. Civilian deaths and injuries keep rising, and crimes including sexual violence have been reported. Fierce attacks on civilian infrastructure have also been widely reported recently. This webinar aims to convey what is happening on the ground, beyond what news reports and written reports can tell.
The main speaker is journalist Rei Shiba, who has covered conflict zones such as Palestine and Iraq and reported from eastern Ukraine and elsewhere this June. He will talk about civilian harm and the reality of the fear of war.
Ms. Anhelina Hrytsei, a researcher at the Ukrainian NGO Truth Hounds, has newly joined as a guest speaker. Truth Hounds investigates and documents human rights violations and violations of international humanitarian law during armed conflict, working to lead to accountability. Drawing on her field research, she will speak about the effects of short-range drones on the battlefield and on civilians.
Key points
- Hear two perspectives: a journalist who reported from the field and a researcher who investigates in Ukraine
- Research-based talks, including the effects of short-range drones on the battlefield and on civilians
- Free Zoom webinar. Registration closes Friday, October 30 at noon
Why we recommend this event
The harm of war is often told in numbers, but the words of people who report and investigate on site convey the reality civilians face far more concretely. It is a chance to learn what the news rarely touches.
Being online and free, it is easy to join from far away and for first-timers. It is recommended for anyone who wants to think about Ukraine from the viewpoint of international humanitarian law and human rights.

Editor's comment
This looks like a valuable chance to hear, in the words of people on the ground, the reality of an invasion now in its fifth year, rather than letting it remain news from a distant country.
Registration closes at noon on October 30. If it interests you, take a look at the Peatix page early.
