Nakayoshi Gakuen Project held the "Dream Quest Academy Connecting to the World: Iki Island PEACE CAMP 2026". Participants experienced themes such as Iki's food, life in Syria, marine plastics, the ongoing war in Ukraine and peaceful community building, then linked them to their own interests and strengths to create materials they could send out to the world.

The results include an animated lesson that turns Ukrainian vegetables into characters, a video demonstrating skateboarding, a comedy video, and slides introducing the food culture of a student's hometown. Each starts from the creator's own likes and strengths.

The materials are to be used in schools and learning settings overseas, and reactions from there will be returned to the participants so the materials can grow further, a "relay of teaching and learning" the organization says begins with this camp.

Key points

  • Six students from across Japan created materials in two days
  • Tasted "Nakayoshi Furikake" made with Iki ingredients and cooked ramen together
  • Finished materials are planned for use in overseas classrooms

Why this news stands out

Going beyond just "knowing" about global issues to "delivering" something with your own strengths is a useful model for how young people can take part.

It is also striking that familiar themes such as local food and marine plastics lead to materials for international cooperation.

“I found the idea that you don't need to do anything special, just share what you love, refreshing. The range of materials is surprising too.”

“I agree with Aoba about starting from what you love. The freer the form, from animation to comedy, the easier it probably is to keep going.”

“The examples of materials you both mention are limited to those in the source. The number of participants and dates also match.”

“The message that you don't need to do anything special stays with me. Your own "likes" could reach someone, too. Why not start by thinking of something you're good at?”
