The UN Singers, founded in 1947 by staff at the UN Headquarters in New York, are visiting Japan to mark the 70th anniversary of Japan's UN membership and will give concerts in four cities: Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kyoto and Hiroshima. This is their fifth visit to Japan since 2006.

The choir's members come from many nationalities and have long used music as a common language to promote peace and freedom. This time they will sing with local citizens' choirs in each city, conveying hopes for peace and the future through song.

At the Tokyo concert, the UN Singers will perform songs from around the world in their original languages, wearing national costumes. Goodwill ambassadors, special guests and a citizens' choir will also take the stage, and the evening will close with a joint chorus of "Daichi Sanshō."

Key points

  • UN staff choir singing songs from many countries in their own languages
  • Performing together with a citizens' choir, ending in a joint chorus
  • Free admission in Tokyo, but advance registration is required

Why we recommend this event

It is a rare chance to feel the work of the United Nations up close through music. It is welcoming both to people interested in international cooperation and peace and to those attending a UN-related event for the first time.

Co-creating a message of peace with local citizens' choirs is another appealing feature.
