The Japan Committee for UNICEF is one of the UNICEF committees in 32 countries and areas worldwide, and the official channel for UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) in Japan. Under a cooperation agreement with UNICEF, it carries out fundraising, public information, and advocacy aimed at realizing children's rights within Japan. It was established as an incorporated foundation in 1955 and became a public interest incorporated foundation in 2011.

To protect the lives and rights of every child, UNICEF works in about 190 countries and areas, giving top priority to children who are hardest to reach. It carries out health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education, protection from violence and exploitation, HIV/AIDS, emergency response and more, and it is explained that all of its funding comes from donations and voluntary contributions from individuals, companies, organizations and governments.

The website introduces many ways to help, including fixed monthly giving, one-time donations, and emergency and recovery funds for conflict and disaster areas. It also carries an abridged translation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, learning materials, world news, financial reports, and information on visiting the exhibition at UNICEF House.

Key points

  • The official channel in Japan supporting UNICEF's work
  • Fundraising, public information and advocacy carried out under a joint plan with UNICEF
  • Rich learning content, such as materials on the Convention on the Rights of the Child and news about children around the world

Why this organization deserves attention

Beyond accepting donations, it puts effort into public information and awareness on the situation of children worldwide and children's rights. Through daily-updated world news and learning materials, you can learn about children's lives right now.

It publishes reports on its activities and finances, and says that accounting documents and audit reports can all be viewed. With ways to cooperate for schools, companies and groups as well, it is an organization where you can choose how to get involved.

Editor's comment

Children in faraway countries and children living in Japan are connected through the same view of children's rights. The "children's stories" on the website convey realities that numbers alone cannot.

Why not start by reading the world news? A visit to the exhibition at UNICEF House is also introduced.
