This presentation will provide a comparative analysis of the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology status in Japan and Brazil. Japan¡Çs Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions trends is declining while in Brazil it is increasing. Among Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs), the potential of GHG mitigation through CCS has gained prominence. The research identifies the main activities and positions of the actors involved in CCS technology implementation in Japan and Brazil, and contrasts and compares reasons for the large-scale use of CCS technologies in the two countries. The methodology used to carry out this analysis was based on literature review, and a field survey was conducted for collecting primary data via visits to organizations and experts. This data was supplemented by a patents deposits analysis on CCS in both countries in the last twenty Regarding the legal framework for climate change, and especially for CCS, it is possible to verify the responses to the main internationals decisions in Japan. In Brazil, however, this has not been the case. CCS activities occur in a different way in both countries. In Japan, the public sector participates effectively together with the private sector and civil society. In Brazil, CCS activities are conducted by the private sector which is pushing civil society, particularly academia. Currently, Japan is focusing on CCS capture technologies, while Brazil is focusing on CCS storage technologies. In summary, the CCS framework in Japan has been conducted more efficiently than in Brazil.
