The development of science & technology (S&T) is for the betterment of human life. However, with the rapid development of S&T, it has become difficult for the general public to keep up with and understand the issues. In the case of Japan, Japanese youth lack foundational knowledge of science concepts and are also showing less interest in science issues.[1] Therefore, it is important to explore new approaches for the practical implementation of science communication (SC) activities, in order to foster and enhance science literacy among the general public. This presentation discusses two examples of SC activities. First, it introduces a participatory approach, namely Bio-café events, and narrates experiences from their pilot implementation in Japan and Taiwan.[2] As the case study shows, Bio-café events are not only a useful SC tool, but they are also helpful for building effective analysis methods on SC activities. The second case study illustrates public engagement activities on environmental protection issues involving different stakeholders. The initiative, led by the government of Taiwan to protect the first National Marine Park- the Donsha Atoll, demonstrates the importance of the implementation of effective SC activities involving different stakeholders, and particular government organizations. Based on these two case studies, key factors enabling effective SC activities in the light of rapid development of S&T for sustainable development will be highlighted.

Chia-Hsin Chen holds a MA in Environmental and Occupational Health from Medical College National Chen Kung University and a BA in Environmental Engineering and Science from Feng Chia University in Taiwan. She received her PhD in Bioindustrial Sciences from the University of Tsukuba, Japan in March 2008 while working on the ELSI (Ethics, legal and social implications) of biotechnology. Her doctoral research focused on biosafety issues emphasizing the regulatory framework and implementation pitfalls of living modified organisms. Based on this holistic study, Chen also recognized the importance of science communication in biotechnology. She joined UNU-IAS in October 2008 as a UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellow with Science Policy for Sustainable Development. Her research focuses on commercialized biotech crops and the implementation of science communication mechanisms for biotechnology.
